Now What?!

I have finished my TEFL Course!  I am officially a foreign language teacher, how strange.  It is a very weird feeling that I no longer have to go to class anymore and my schedule that I was feeling comfortable in is finished.  In the beginning of the class I couldn’t wait to the class to end, now I feel a bit lost without it.

Overall, the course was FAR less intensive that I was expecting.  There were a few essays here and there, and a few lesson plans, but nothing impossible.  I really liked everyone in my class and we all grew to be great friends.  One girl in our class left to go home to Detroit today.  It is sad to say bye, but at the same time it is weird to think I have only known her a month and such a strong friendship was built.  It has really felt like college, bonds are just made.  But don’t worry college friends you will never be replaced!

For the last day of class we went over ‘what to expect when teaching’ and then out for lunch.  It was nice to go out with our instructors and have everyone just chill, talk and drink.  It was a nice end to the class and was sad even saying bye to my instructors.  I am sure I will be in contact with them in the future.

So now that I have accomplished my goal of staying a month and completing the course I have a bigger goal.  Getting a job, Spain is far worse than what people believe.  I actually would have got elsewhere if I knew the terrible situation they are in.  But that is here nor there, I am applying like crazy to jobs and I hope to land a nice one teaching in the school with children.  I will keep you posted when that happens.  I am also open to moving somewhere else that has better opportunities, but for the month of September I will be in Barcelona.  Got to take 1 month at a time!

This weekend is Labor Day back home and since everyone in my class is American/Canadian we decided why not have a BBQ and celebrate?!  So it was our mission to get American food and throw a party.  It was like a going away party for Kelly as well.  We went over to her place and sat out on the terrace all night eating, drinking and playing games.  Thanks Les for the Hawkeye cards, they were well used! It was a great way to celebrate and it felt a bit like home

(a very bright office building and nothing more than that)

So it is said that fashion starts in Europe and move to the US, well here are some examples that I really hope never make it to the US.  Everyone here seems to have a mullet; guy, girl or kids! It’s not cute.

At night there are men selling food and beer on the street for bar goers.  While most times it is very tempting, I now will never buy anything from one of these street venders.  One night we saw a man open the sewer and pull a bag of beer out of it.  His plan was then to go and sell the beer.  I now understand why Spain is trying to make street vending illegal, because they have to hide their extra supplies, which is disgusting! While 1euro is a great deal for a beer, I do not want sewer juice on it.

(the guy just swung open the sewer and vola! BEER)

Up next, ROME!

  1. Congrats on finishing with your course. I'll be sending you lots of luck on the search for a job. I'm sure you'll find something! I hope the mullet crazy will not be spreading to the children of america anytime soon hahaha, sewer juice might be a new american trend tho! Love you <3

Scooters, Scooters EVERYWHERE!!

We arrived in Ho Chi Minh and what a drastic change it was from Siem Reap. There were so many people, cars and motorbikes. I really enjoyed and laid back feel of Siem Reap; now time for a busy city. We grabbed a taxi and headed to District 1. Our hostel was located right in the middle of the restaurant and bar district. Once we dropped our bags off at the hostel we walked down the main street and grabbed a coffee at a local egg coffe shop. After the Vietnam War there was a shortage of milk, so the Vietnamese started using egg in their coffee. It was delicious! It was a creamy, frothy texture and did not taste like egg. It came to be a favorite coffee place; even for Amber who is a tea-aholic! For dinner we went to a Pho soup place- it was savory and very filling. I am still going strong on my soup kick. When continued to explore District 1 and grabbed a few drinks before calling it a night. The next day we wandered around the local market; you could literally buy anything y...

First Stop of the Southeast Asia Tour- Singapore

I have always been interested in Southeast Asia, but never thought I would have the chance to go. I went to Europe on my own, but I felt this trip I needed some travel buddies. When I first met Gina in Hawaii she mentioned going to Thailand after the assignment. Well, that interest is becoming a reality. Gina, Amber and myself are doing a trip through Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. Amber is a fellow travel nurse that also has a passion, for well, travel. Getting to Singapore was a daunting thought- 24 hours on a plane. But it actually was not that bad, All Nippon Airways was great! They had comfy seating, excellent entertainment, surprisely good food and very nice flight attendants. Burger patty, rice, carrots; salad; noodle soup; antipasto; spinach and chicken salad; vanilla ice cream I landed in Singapore around 11:30pm, so I decided to just grab a hotel and shower and get some rest. It was a very charming hotel, that was previously an Opera H...

Ciao from the city of canals and hidden streets!

August 7, 2015 Venice- It was an obstacle to get to you! From Paris we walked to the metro, took the metro to the bus, took the bus to the airport, took a plane to Venice airport, took a bus to the city centre and then walked to our accommodation.   When we arrived it was very very warm, 95 degrees! Such a change from chilly, damp Dublin. We had a bit of a journey finding our next AirBnB place; something I didn't know was the streets on Googlemaps don't really match what is truly here. So we wondered around for a while until we had to ask for help. We stopped at this very nice hotel and the staff there were amazing. They helped us call the owner of the apartment we were staying at and walked with us to ensure we got there safely. This local man working at the hotel did not have an idea where the apartment was, so it took awhile, but we found it! We probably would not have found it without his help. When we arrived at the apartment, it wasn't exactly what w...
