Our New Pad

Host apartment no more!  As much as I liked Maria and her drinking habits it is nice to have our own place.  No more late night bus rides that take an hour just to get back to Maria's or having to plan our day around the bus system. We live right in the heart of Barcelona, a 10-minute walk to Las Ramblas and a 2-minute walk to the metro.  The area is amazing! Filled with little cafes, restaurantes, shops and bars.  It reminds me a lot of my first apartment in Chicago.  There is a gay area very close to where our apartment is, which reminds me of Boystown and all their shops. The people are very friendly here and I feel very comfortable in our new area.

The apartment is pretty big as well!  There is a big dining room, family room and 2-full bathrooms.  All the bedrooms are double beds and pretty good sized.  Right now it is only Nic and I, however the apartment is a 3-bedroom.  The owner of the apartment is not here right now and may not be returning. Visitors welcome, we have an extra bedroom!

(My bedroom! Not a twin bed)

(Bathroom, obviously! Got to love the shower curtain)

The apartment has the Spanish charm, the tile flooring, decorative ceiling, big floor-to-ceiling windows and high ceilings. Nic and I love the location and everything about the apartment. All of the other apartments do not measure up to this one!

At first we were very worried about not finding an apartment because most times the owners require a work contract and a yearlong lease.  Neither of which we had.  So while we had looked at many apartments, they were either crappy and we did not feel comfortable living there or they owners would say they could rent to us because we didn’t have the documents.

Luckily we were patient, even though we were freaking out and we landed this apartment.  Stephen our instructor from our course knew the person who owns the apartment and a former student in our class was staying here for the month during the course.  So we had seen the apartment and knew right away we loved it!  Now for the job part…..

Rome, Naples, Pompeii OH MY!

My course has been completed and I decided I needed to get out of Barcelona for a bit, and on top of my list was Rome.  I decided to take a 3 night, 4-day trip by myself to discover the ancient city. After traveling to London and with everything that I would have done differently, I now know how to pack and travel lightly.  I know how the airport functions and that I do not need to be there 2 hours before, like O’Hare.  So everything went smoothly on my trip to Rome.  No glitches!  That was feat and I was so happy about it. So I arrived in Rome on Monday, September 3 @ 10am.  I made it to my hostel and everything went smoothly.  I decided I wanted to go see the Colosseum first since it was nice out and I would be mainly outside when I was touring it.  It was OUTSTANDING.  I cannot believe that I was walking around the inside of the Colosseum.  Only about 30% of the building remains, meaning that this was a HUGE buildi...

Lord grant me patience.

How long can you wait until you can’t wait any longer?   I am at that breaking point.   I have the feeling of dread pulling me one way in my current lifestyle and the feeling of excitement and anticipation pulling me the other way.   As July comes near nervousness is thrown in the mixture.   Soon even I will not be able to recognize my own life, things are under major reconstruction. The REAL beginning of my year in Barcelona

Saying good-bye to Anne in London was very difficult, we had had such an amazing weekend and I did not want to go back to Barcelona.  The flight went smoothly, I knew not to make the same mistake with trying to get on Ryanair with two bags; I just checked it right away.  I then took the Aerobus back to the city center and grabbed a cab to the new apartment.  The apartment was not exactly what I was imagining or predicted; it was quite a distance away from the city and it was a host situation. Maria was the host, meaning we lived with her and not that she was just the landlord.  At first I thought it was not at all the situation I wanted and that I wanted my own apartment to have freedom to do whatever.  Well I was proven wrong when I was in Barcelona for four nights by myself; Maria turned out to be a great friend and kept me sane.  It was a blessing to have someone around that could help me get around the city and to talk to.  Maria does not kno...
