I live in the land of Fairytales!

I have had the extraordinary opportunity to see many castles in Spain, near and around Barcelona.  I had no idea that Europe was full of so many amazing structures.

The castles in Spain are much smaller than the castles in say, Germany.  The reason being that since Spain and its main cities are on the Balearic Sea there were far more battles, due to the enormous waterfront.  Since there were many battles there was not much time to build huge castles and the Spanish had to resort to building smaller structures.

October 7, 2012.  I had met this really nice guy in the incambio group I had been going to for a few weeks.  And he was a physical trainer and invited me to go snorkeling with him at Garraf Harbor, since he had all the goggles and snorkeling equipment.  I never would have thought I would be going in the sea in October and it be tolerable!  It was a great experience and the water was so pretty and blue!  We did not see much more than some smaller fish and coral, but overall it was a lot of fun.

After snorkeling all day we decided to go to Stiges, Spain, which is south of Barcelona.  There is a castle on the sea located in the little harbor town.  This town is actually known for its gay community and most of the people walking around were wearing rainbows.  It reminded me a lot of Boystown in Chicago.

The town had a ton of little restaurants and outside cafes set up for just relaxing and enjoying the amazing weather.  The streets were small and wound around corners which led to beautiful structures.  It reminded me of the gothic area in Barcelona, only on a smaller scale.

Next castle I visited was in Tarragonna, which is also south of Barcelona.  Unfortunately I did not get any pictures of this castle because it was at night.  But it was this tiny castle located on a point and had a large sea front.  We were able to walk along the rock shore and saw a tunnel leading to the sea, where the king could escape if needed.  We also saw a bunker that was still intact on the rock shore.  The tunnel and bunker were a bit eerie; you could look inside and see the small slits in the rock walls where soldiers shot from at their opponents.

The sky was so clear that night that the stars were so visible.  I saw about 5 shooting stars while walking around castle.  I do not think I have ever seen so many shooting stars in my life!

October 11, 2012.  There is a castle in Barcelona, fortress Montjuic, located at the southern most part of the city.  To get to the top of the hill, where the castle is located, you have to take a cable car.  Riding in the cable car gave an amazing view of Barcelona and the sea.

The original canons were still located on the exterior wall of the fortress and I was able to walk through the main square. The flowered square was outstanding and one of the few areas with green grass and flowers due to the heat and expense of watering. I would love to travel Ireland next and see all of the outstanding castles.

Rome, Naples, Pompeii OH MY!

My course has been completed and I decided I needed to get out of Barcelona for a bit, and on top of my list was Rome.  I decided to take a 3 night, 4-day trip by myself to discover the ancient city. After traveling to London and with everything that I would have done differently, I now know how to pack and travel lightly.  I know how the airport functions and that I do not need to be there 2 hours before, like O’Hare.  So everything went smoothly on my trip to Rome.  No glitches!  That was feat and I was so happy about it. So I arrived in Rome on Monday, September 3 @ 10am.  I made it to my hostel and everything went smoothly.  I decided I wanted to go see the Colosseum first since it was nice out and I would be mainly outside when I was touring it.  It was OUTSTANDING.  I cannot believe that I was walking around the inside of the Colosseum.  Only about 30% of the building remains, meaning that this was a HUGE buildi...

The REAL beginning of my year in Barcelona

Saying good-bye to Anne in London was very difficult, we had had such an amazing weekend and I did not want to go back to Barcelona.  The flight went smoothly, I knew not to make the same mistake with trying to get on Ryanair with two bags; I just checked it right away.  I then took the Aerobus back to the city center and grabbed a cab to the new apartment.  The apartment was not exactly what I was imagining or predicted; it was quite a distance away from the city and it was a host situation. Maria was the host, meaning we lived with her and not that she was just the landlord.  At first I thought it was not at all the situation I wanted and that I wanted my own apartment to have freedom to do whatever.  Well I was proven wrong when I was in Barcelona for four nights by myself; Maria turned out to be a great friend and kept me sane.  It was a blessing to have someone around that could help me get around the city and to talk to.  Maria does not kno...

The Perfect Last Trip....

October 31, 2012- I have never spent Halloween any other way than in a costume, however this year is a bit different. My last trip in Europe was Portugal.  My awesome roommate Nic is Portuguese and her grandma was visiting their family home in Coimbra.  So Nic invited me to visit her grandma and family in Portugal for a few days to end my time in Europe.  It turned out to be the most beautiful place I had visited my entire time in Europe and I felt very welcomed by Nic’s entire family. (Minha's house is the one with the red roof) The journey to Nic’s small town was going to be a challenge; there was no real easy way to get there.  The town is Sao Frutuoso and has a very small population, however there is a bar!  So that is a plus.  We started our trip by flying to Porto and then took two trains, a cab and then a bus to the town.  Nic’s grandma, Minha was very excited and was standing outside waiting for us to arrive along with her...
