Ciao from the city of canals and hidden streets!

August 7, 2015

Venice- It was an obstacle to get to you! From Paris we walked to the metro, took the metro to the bus, took the bus to the airport, took a plane to Venice airport, took a bus to the city centre and then walked to our accommodation.

When we arrived it was very very warm, 95 degrees! Such a change from chilly, damp Dublin. We had a bit of a journey finding our next AirBnB place; something I didn't know was the streets on Googlemaps don't really match what is truly here. So we wondered around for a while until we had to ask for help. We stopped at this very nice hotel and the staff there were amazing. They helped us call the owner of the apartment we were staying at and walked with us to ensure we got there safely. This local man working at the hotel did not have an idea where the apartment was, so it took awhile, but we found it! We probably would not have found it without his help.

When we arrived at the apartment, it wasn't exactly what we were expecting. For one, it was so hot out and no airconditioning. So we starting to think we may die if we try to stay with these accommodations.

So we went back to the helpful hotel and they once again were an extreme help and found us a hotel for the next 2 nights with airconditioning, since they were all booked up. This same man walked with us to the hotel to make sure we didn't get lost--- which is so easy to do! He was seriously a God sent.

Once we booked the hotel, we cranked the air and jump in a cold shower. Since it took a while to get everything settled, we were starving by 5pm. Having dinner this early for us is uncommon since most of Europe doesn't eat until 9 or 10pm. So we decided anyway to scope out the area for a pizza place.

We stumbled upon a cute cafe with outside seating. Along with a few drinks we scarfed down two pizzas. They were AWESOME! Then bring on the wine!! We bought a bottle and sat along the canal while watching the boats zip by. We were surprised with all the congestion on the waterway that there aren't any accidents. It was fun to see the gondolas, water taxis, tourist boats and personal boats go every which way.

Time for some gelato! There are oodles of shops with gelato and pizza, so it was hard to know which was the best. I decided on a cherry/vanilla and nutty/nutella cup of gelato, while Blythe got a coconut and chocolate chip gelato. It was a great end to a long, stressful day! And we are definately going to try another flavor tomorrrow! Hopefully with all this walking we do everyday we won't look like oompa lumpas when we get home! :)

-Today we decided to wander to the island of Venice and hopefully not get too lost. Luckily it was not as hot today as it was yesterday and we were able to survive.

We walked from one end of the city to the other to see Piazza San Marco, which is the most famous square in the town. That is where the well know bridge is located, Ponte del Sospiti, and there are sweeping views of the city at the waterfront.

We then had trouble finding our way back to the area we were familiar with; there are so many little alleys and dead ends it was very difficult to get back. We do not understand how locals find their way around these secret corridors.

Celebrating with wine from the return from the other end of the city was a must!!!! We sat on steps leading into the canal and watched everyone walk and drive by in their boats. Showering was then needed before dinner. So we cooled down in our hotel and then headed out to try a new pizza/pasta place. I don't know which place I liked better, the pizza and carbonara pasta was very savory as our last night in Venice and we topped off our night with cannolis! Up next Roma!!!

Rome, Naples, Pompeii OH MY!

My course has been completed and I decided I needed to get out of Barcelona for a bit, and on top of my list was Rome.  I decided to take a 3 night, 4-day trip by myself to discover the ancient city. After traveling to London and with everything that I would have done differently, I now know how to pack and travel lightly.  I know how the airport functions and that I do not need to be there 2 hours before, like O’Hare.  So everything went smoothly on my trip to Rome.  No glitches!  That was feat and I was so happy about it. So I arrived in Rome on Monday, September 3 @ 10am.  I made it to my hostel and everything went smoothly.  I decided I wanted to go see the Colosseum first since it was nice out and I would be mainly outside when I was touring it.  It was OUTSTANDING.  I cannot believe that I was walking around the inside of the Colosseum.  Only about 30% of the building remains, meaning that this was a HUGE buildi...

Lord grant me patience.

How long can you wait until you can’t wait any longer?   I am at that breaking point.   I have the feeling of dread pulling me one way in my current lifestyle and the feeling of excitement and anticipation pulling me the other way.   As July comes near nervousness is thrown in the mixture.   Soon even I will not be able to recognize my own life, things are under major reconstruction. The REAL beginning of my year in Barcelona

Saying good-bye to Anne in London was very difficult, we had had such an amazing weekend and I did not want to go back to Barcelona.  The flight went smoothly, I knew not to make the same mistake with trying to get on Ryanair with two bags; I just checked it right away.  I then took the Aerobus back to the city center and grabbed a cab to the new apartment.  The apartment was not exactly what I was imagining or predicted; it was quite a distance away from the city and it was a host situation. Maria was the host, meaning we lived with her and not that she was just the landlord.  At first I thought it was not at all the situation I wanted and that I wanted my own apartment to have freedom to do whatever.  Well I was proven wrong when I was in Barcelona for four nights by myself; Maria turned out to be a great friend and kept me sane.  It was a blessing to have someone around that could help me get around the city and to talk to.  Maria does not kno...
